The Indian Sustainable Natural Rubber (iSNR) Platform is a framework designed to promote the production of natural rubber in a way that is economically viable, socially equitable, and environmentally sustainable. This initiative was launched with the aim of improving the sustainability of the natural rubber sector in India, which is traditionally fraught with environmental and social challenges. Rubber plantations often face issues like deforestation, unsustainable farming practices, and poor working conditions for laborers.
The iSNR platform works in collaboration with rubber growers, government bodies, industry stakeholders, and global sustainability standards to ensure that the rubber supply chain becomes more resilient, ethical, and environmentally friendly.
India is the second-largest producer of natural rubber globally, after Thailand, and the largest consumer of natural rubber. The rubber industry is a crucial part of India’s agricultural economy, with the majority of rubber plantations located in the southern states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. However, the growing demand for rubber has led to increased pressure on land resources and the environment.

This includes reducing deforestation, promoting agroforestry, improving soil health, and conserving water resources. By adopting sustainable practices, rubber farmers can increase productivity while minimizing their environmental footprint.
b. Improve Labor Conditions
Labor welfare is a critical aspect of sustainability in the rubber industry. The iSNR platform aims to improve working conditions for rubber tappers by ensuring fair wages, better living conditions, and access to healthcare and education. This helps address issues related to exploitation and ensures that rubber production is socially responsible.
c. Enhance Traceability and Transparency
One of the key goals of the iSNR platform is to improve the traceability of rubber from plantation to final product. By ensuring that rubber is sourced sustainably and ethically, consumers and industries can make informed choices about the products they buy. This transparency is crucial in aligning the rubber industry with global sustainability standards.
d. Comply with International Sustainability Standards
The iSNR platform encourages Indian rubber producers to meet international sustainability standards, such as those set by the Global Platform for Sustainable Natural Rubber (GPSNR). These standards ensure that rubber production minimizes harm to the environment, supports fair labor practices, and promotes biodiversity conservation.

The platform also seeks to increase market access for sustainably produced rubber, both in domestic and international markets. As global demand for sustainable products grows, the iSNR platform ensures that Indian rubber producers can tap into these opportunities by adopting sustainable and responsible production practices.
The iSNR platform is based on several core principles and components that ensure its effectiveness in promoting sustainable natural rubber production. These include:
a. Sustainability Certification
The iSNR platform works closely with certification bodies to certify rubber producers that meet sustainability criteria. Certifications such as the Sustainable Natural Rubber Initiative (SNR-I) are provided to rubber plantations that follow sustainable agricultural practices, use minimal chemical inputs, and adhere to social responsibility standards.
b. Training and Capacity Building
To achieve its goals, the platform provides training to rubber farmers, workers, and plantation managers. These training programs focus on best practices for sustainable agriculture, improved tapping techniques, soil health management, pest control, and worker welfare.
c. Agroforestry and Diversified Farming
To reduce the environmental impact of monoculture rubber plantations, the iSNR platform promotes the integration of agroforestry systems. By planting other crops alongside rubber trees, farmers can increase biodiversity, improve soil health, and reduce the risk of pest infestations.
