Getting Drunk, on Homoeopathy

Introduction

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is no less than a battle. Every year, lakhs of aspirants jump into the ocean of General Studies, Ethics, and Essay writing, hoping to swim across to the shores of LBSNAA. But what if I told you that you don’t need to just study—what if you could get “drunk” on knowledge? Not with alcohol, of course, but with homeopathy!

Homeopathy is based on the principle of similia similibus curentur—”like cures like.” And UPSC preparation? Well, it operates on the same idea. You cure the fear of failure by drowning yourself in even more failure. You become a philosopher through excessive study of philosophy. So why not embrace this homeopathic intoxication and ride it all the way to success?

Understanding Homeopathy—The UPSC Way

Before we start “drinking” homeopathic wisdom, let’s understand how homeopathy works. It suggests that the more diluted something is, the more powerful it becomes.

Now, apply that to your UPSC preparation:

  • The more vague your optional subject, the stronger your chances of clearing UPSC!
  • The fewer the study materials you read, the deeper your understanding becomes!
  • The more abstract your answers, the greater your marks!

This is the same reason why toppers say they relied only on NCERTs, while the rest of us have a pile of books that could double as furniture.

Dilution is the Key—How Less Becomes More in UPSC

Homeopathy dilutes substances to a point where no molecule of the original substance remains, yet its “essence” is supposed to be intact. The same applies to UPSC preparation.

  • Polity: Instead of reading Laxmikanth’s 900 pages, just read the Preamble multiple times. Its essence is enough.
  • History: Instead of memorizing 1857 Revolt details, just understand that “Britishers were bad.” That should be enough.
  • Economy: Instead of studying GDP, inflation, and RBI reports, just write “global factors” as the cause for everything.
  • Essay Writing: Keep diluting your points until they become philosophical. A simple question about urbanization? Just start with Aristotle, mix some Gandhi, and sprinkle some “Indian ethos.”

The UPSC examiner, much like a homeopath, will sense the “essence” of your knowledge and reward you accordingly.

The Placebo Effect of Motivation

Homeopathy works because of the placebo effect. People believe they are being cured, so they feel better. Similarly, UPSC aspirants live off motivational quotes.

  • “Success is not final, failure is not fatal.” (Yet, you still fail Prelims.)
  • “Trust the process.” (What if the process leads to a cycle of repeated attempts?)
  • “Work hard in silence, let success make the noise.” (Only if success ever comes.)

These quotes are the homeopathic pills of your preparation—99% dilution, 1% real substance. But somehow, they keep you going.

The Drunkenness of Overconfidence

  • When you overdose on homeopathy, nothing happens—except that you start believing in its power. Similarly, after months of UPSC preparation, you start believing:

    • “This year is my year!” (Even if it’s your 5th attempt.)
    • “I have a feeling I will clear this time.” (Feelings are not a substitute for answer writing.)
    • “UPSC is unpredictable, so let’s not study too much.” (UPSC is unpredictable, but not that unpredictable.)

Just like a drunk person insists they can walk straight when they clearly can’t, an overconfident aspirant insists they will clear UPSC without studying smartly.

The Hangover—What Happens After Results?

Much like waking up with a hangover, the day UPSC results are declared is a moment of realization:

  • If you clear Prelims: “Wow, I knew I was brilliant.”
  • If you fail Prelims: “UPSC is unfair, cut-offs are too high.”
  • If you clear Mains: “I was born for this!”
  • If you fail Mains: “I should’ve focused more on Ethics.”
  • If you clear the Interview: “I am an intellectual warrior!”
  • If you fail the Interview: “Life is cruel.”

This cycle continues until you either:

  1. Get selected and join LBSNAA, or
  2. Move on to other career options (cough MBA, State PSCs, or YouTube coaching).

Conclusion

In the end, getting drunk on homeopathy is like being an eternal UPSC aspirant. You keep consuming diluted material, hoping that one day it will make you powerful. But unlike real alcohol, which at least gives you a temporary high, homeopathy just keeps you in a loop of belief.

So, dear aspirants, while homeopathy may not work for medicine, it certainly works for UPSC—because at the end of the day, you need belief, motivation, and a touch of madness to survive this journey.

Good luck, and may you get “intoxicated” with knowledge!
